OCR: To "run" the engine, click and hold down the mouse on the run button, or hold down the right arrow key. The shaded areas inside the P-U diagrams represent the work performed, either by the engine on the "outside world" or work absorbed by the engine. In the example shown below, the engine must do work to push out the exhaust gas, and then draw in a fresh charge of fuel-air misture. This work is wasted, and reduces the efficiency as well as the power available from the engine. There are additional losses in any "real life" engine. These include mechanical friction and the power used by auxiliaries including cooling fan, cooling water, fuel and oil pumps for example.
